It’s a gray, cool, drizzly day here at the Doin’s residence. Perfect day to read some comics before the ol’ graveyard shift. And here’s what’s in the stash today:We got Black Widow #3, Mark Waid and Chris Samnee, and this series has been fantastic so far, the first issue is a 22 page James Bond cold-open that’s one of the best action sequences I’ve seen in comics in a long time. Poe Dameron, which has been very entertaining so far, and B.P.R.D., Baltimore, and a brand new Hellboy in Hell. I can’t wait to get to that last one, it’s the second to last issue of the series. Weird Love, reprints of insane love comics from the 50’s and 60’s, written by horror writers writing horror stories dressed up as romance, there is really nothing like it. Lastly I got the Deadly Hands of CRIMINAL magazine size special. That’s the one you can see Mr. Kittycat Jackson curled up beneath in the leading photo. The goofy kung fu werewolf cover is a disarming ruse from one of the most gut-wrenching, heart breaking short stories I’ve ever read. And I don’t even follow Criminal, some day I’ll pick it up, but they got me last year with their first magazine size special which emulated Savage Sword of Conan covers of yesteryear, and that was amazing too. You don’t have to be familiar with the series to understand or enjoy these two one-shot stories, and I can’t recommend them enough.
Don’t forget this Saturday, May 7th, is Free Comic Book Day, a great way to encourage any of the rotten youth in your life to read, wether you have a nefarious nephews, nightmarish nieces, savage students, or a barbaric brood of your own, it’s never too early to get them some free comics and hook ’em while they’re young. Today they’re reading Spongebob and stealing apples, tomorrow they’re reading Dickens and learning to write grants at prestigious universities, it’s a flawlessly evil trajectory. That’s it for today, boils and ghouls, I can’t keep telling stories every week about my mysterious life here in the swamp, I have evil deeds to do. So long for now.
